Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Each grade is converted to grade points, multiplied by the course's credits, and the total is divided by total credits: Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
What grading scales are supported?
The common 4.0 scale (A=4) and 5.0 scale (A=5), with optional +/− modifiers (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.) that you can toggle off.
How do pass/fail courses count?
Mark them as pass/fail and they are excluded from the GPA numerator but can still count toward the credit calculation if you choose.
Can I calculate a cumulative GPA across semesters?
Yes - every course you add contributes, so adding courses from multiple terms gives the running cumulative GPA.
What if my school uses a different scale?
The tool shows the weighting math so you can translate: schools with +/− curves just shift the per-letter points. Choose 4.0/5.0 as the base and the rest is the same formula.
Is the calculator private?
Yes - grades live only in your browser session.
How is weighted GPA calculated compared to unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA calculates grades on a 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA adds bonus grade points (typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB courses).
Can I add multiple semesters and custom credit hours?
Yes. You can enter individual course credit hours and letter grades to compute your term GPA and cumulative GPA.
