Frequently asked questions
How are PayPal fees structured?
A percentage of the transaction plus a small fixed fee, e.g. 2.99% + $0.49 per transaction for US domestic goods-and-services payments. Different countries differ.
How do I calculate what to charge to receive a net amount?
Required charge = (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee rate). If the rate is 2.99% and the fixed fee $0.49, to net $100 you charge (100 + 0.49) ÷ 0.9701 ≈ $103.57.
Are domestic and international fees different?
Yes - international payments carry additional cross-border percentage fees on top of the standard rate. The calculator models both.
Do friends-and-family payments have fees?
In some regions, sending money with the "friends and family" option via card incurs a fee, while bank funding is usually free. Use the mode switcher to match your case.
Are currency conversion fees included?
No - payments made in a currency other than your account currency also carry a conversion spread, which varies and is excluded from the estimate.
Where should I verify these rates?
PayPal's own fee page for your country. The values in this tool are the standard published ones as of the build date and may drift.
What is the difference between domestic and international PayPal transaction fees?
International commercial transactions usually incur an additional cross-border percentage fee (typically 1.5%) on top of the standard domestic rate.
How do I calculate how much to invoice so I receive an exact amount after fees?
The calculator provides an "Ask for" amount using the formula: (Target Amount + Fixed Fee) / (1 - Percentage Rate).
